Our classroom now has new Waffle Blocks for indoor recess. They were purchased with our prize money from our Winning Red Ribbon Week poster. Our Veterans Day display.
Thanks for waiting for this update. I was much too sick last weekend to post so let me fill you in on what's been happening over the last two weeks....
Reading: As you know, the children are now working in their Kindergarten Superkids reading workbooks. We have covered the letters Cc, Oo and Gg so far, focusing primarily on the first sounds heard in words. The children's handwriting has been steadily improving. Thank you for working with them on their homework! The children just took their first, official Superkids test. You will see those coming home next week. I will break the test down into individual skills like initial sounds and letter naming in order to enter their grades into Skyward. I will also write an overall score on the test so you have a better feel how your child is progressing. Look for those tests to come home on Tuesday. As always, if your child struggled, we may review and re-test. Next week we will finish up our Gg unit, focusing on hearing the hard g sound (as in gum, not gym) at the end of words. We will then move on to Unit 4 and the letter Aa. The students will focus on the short a sound (as in apple) in both the first and middle position in words (apple, cat). Math: The children finished and were tested on the Numbers 1-5. We will continue to practice our handwriting as some children are still reversing their numbers or are having trouble fitting them on writing lines. Topic 2 will again revolve around numbers 1-5. The children will put the numbers in order, find missing numbers from number lines, and compare sets to which has more or fewer. The most challenging skill in this unit is comparing two sets and determining how many more or fewer one has. Science: We did a general study of animals including body coverings, animal movement, animal needs, habitats and life cycles. The children enjoyed listening to the song Habitat by John Farrell.
We also listened to the song below about ocelots, an endangered animal featured in our Oswald Superkid book, just for fun.
Social Studies:
The children learned about Veterans Day and we made special projects for this theme. We can't wait for you to see them when you come to school for Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. This coming week the students will learn a bit about map skills as we study Alf and the many places he wishes to travel on his adventures in Reading Class. We will also use maps to learn about the travels of the Pilgrims as Thanksgiving draws near.
