The children were excited to make handprint turkeys and they love singing our Thanksgiving songs. We finished the book Ready Freddy: Turkey Trouble and the children gave the book two thumbs up and said it was really funny. They also wanted me to tell you that they liked being able to choose their own Literacy centers today. A few children said that they had a lot of fun today!
The children are off to a great start this week. I was very proud of their behavior today. We are almost finished our Unit on Alf and will have a beginning sounds test tomorrow. The children were also introduced to the term "vowel" and listened to vowel sounds in the middle of words. In Math class, we took our mid-chapter review test on the numbers 6 through 10 (which had originally been scheduled for Friday). We also practiced counting to 50.

Today we reviewed Golly and the /g/ sound. Children enjoyed sorting Golly's bones by their initial and final sounds. We also met a new Superkid named Alf. He loves having all sorts of adventures but is plagued by ants wherever he goes. The children thought this was really funny. They also took a test that covered all skills learned in Units 1-3. Look for green test folders in your child's book bag tomorrow after school.
In Math we finished up our TouchMath number books on the numbers 1-9. You will see the touch points on each number that children use to practice counting. These books will also be in your child's book bag tomorrow and you may keep them at home. Math Chapter 4 on the numbers 6-10 will take us right up to Thanksgiving. This afternoon the children did a great job writing in their journals and they practiced sounding out words in our small Literacy groups. We had a fun indoor recess and I received a great report about the children's behavior after Library today. A cafeteria worker also reports regularly thatour class is very polite and has excellent manners. I was very proud of them today. Tomorrow is Library day. The children do not have books to return because of the Book fair last week. They should be receiving new books tomorrow.
Today in class, the children listened for and identified the last sounds in words. This is a new skill the children are learning this week. They also listened to a silly story called "Gregory's Green Goggles." Today was the last day for the letter Gg. Tomorrow we will start a unit on Alf and the letter Aa. The children wanted me to tell you that only half the class stayed on green all day because many children were too loud today. They did say they will have a better day tomorrow. They also wanted me to write that they had a lot of fun painting in Art class today. The children had a great time at the book fair today. Families can still visit the Book Fair after school tonight and tomorrow night.
The children wanted me to tell you that they had a lot of fun learning about number lines in Math class today. We also made a silly book of odd animals in Reading class and learned about real animals in Science. The children learned about mammals, birds, insects and reptiles. Then we had art class in our classroom. They children were asked to make an art project that contained at least one animal. They were allowed to choose from paint, clay, or our collage art supplies. They children were very creative and enjoyed having art in our own room.
The Reading Festival at the Fairlane mall was a success. Thank you Katie and Hunter for coming. You will receive a special treat on Monday.
Today was a great day in K5. They children worked really hard in the morning on their Oswald lesson. We concentrated on beginning sounds today. They also practiced recognizing and writing the number 0. We had a fun, but chilly. recess today and the children had a lot of fun at today's pep really. We had front row seats and Antonio was chosen to do the Spirit Stick! We were also sad today because our friend David is moving away and today was his last day. The children spent the end of the day telling David what they will miss about him and all agreed he is a really great friend. We wish him well in his new home and school.
Today the students celebrated sandwich day by making their very own PB & J sandwiches in the cafeteria. We also sang the song "Peanut Butter and Jelly. Our class also followed directions and stayed safe during a school-wide fire drill this morning. Congratulations to Katie. She earned a special prize for doing such great job with our PTO fundraiser!!
Sorry it has been so long since I left a message for you...
We had a GREAT Halloween celebration. The children loved watching the parade in the morning and they could not wait to get their own costumes on in the afternoon. I do not post pictures of the students on my website but I will have Halloween pictures for you to see when you come to JSC for parent teacher conferences soon. Our pumpkin turned out really well. There is one picture of it on our classroom photos page. They children learned that a pumpkin can float and roll. They scooped out the insides and voted on a scary face for jack-o-lantern. We lit it up at our Halloween sing along in the gym and it looked really spooky. We had a special snack in the afternoon while children prepared for our turn to parade around the school. They had a wonderful time. This week we began our second Superkids unit on the letter o. We will be focusing primarily on the short o sound. The Superkid for unit 2 is Oswald. He loves learning about odd animals and so do the children. We are reading many non-fiction books this week. We have begun doing some writing already and we just started our November journals today. Children are only responsible for writing the letters and sounds they have learned and I help them with the rest. The children recently wrote and dictated some great recipes to wrap up our unit on Cass and the letter Cc. In Math class we are taking our time with the Numbers 0-5 unit. The children are doing a great job recognizing the numbers, counting sets of objects and counting aloud. They have needed a little extra practice writing the numbers. Number 5 was tricky so they will be practicing that one for homework as well. Today in Library the children learned all about the upcoming Book Fair. Please review the materials that were sent home so that you can decide if you would like to send in money for your child to spend. Also, tomorrow is our Sandwich day celebration and we will be having a special PB& J treat in the afternoon. We will also be voting our our new table team names for November tomorrow. No more vampires, werewolves and mummies... Stay tuned. |
