We have many reasons to celebrate this week. Today was Antonio's birthday. We will be celebrating the 100th day of school, the Pride Program, Groundhog Day and even the Super Bowl this week. The children are off to a great start. We are reading more and more each day and the children have been practicing blending sounds together to read words each day. We are also practicing counting by fives and tens in Math class.

Laila was our Pride Prize winner this week. The children finished a snowman project in Mrs. Bosack's room by making paint prints with cotton balls. They painted faces on too. They also tried out some new Literacy centers. They are now visiting two centers a day and doing twice as much work but also having twice as much fun!
The children did a great job today and accomplished a lot despite the delay. We completed our Reading lesson on medial vowel sounds and our Math lesson on counting and grouping numbers from 10-18. They children are excited to learn about some new Literacy Centers they will be using this week. They are really getting the hang of working independently and practicing skills learned in our morning lessons. We will also be starting a Social Studies unit this week on our community and community helpers.
Just a reminder...Children are not permitted to bring toys to school. Please remember that there is no school on Monday. We learned all about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr today and the children wrote about their dreams for a better world. We have been doing a lot of writing this week. We have been learning about winter weather in Science and the children wrote about their favorite snowy day activities in their journals. They also wrote one fact that they learned about snow. They learned snowflakes have six sides like a hexagon and today we went outside to catch real snowflakes. We saw a few good tiny snowflakes with our magnifying glasses but many were broken or melted. The children then drew what they observed. The children have also been working on a special tissue paper snowman all week.
In Reading, the children have been learning about Icky and the letter Ii. They have been doing a good job with listening for and identifying middle vowel sounds. They also listened to two snow stories this week and compared the main characters in those books. They used a Venn diagram for the first time in order to do this. In Math, the children have been learning about numbers 10-30 and are being introduced to place value. They are counting and breaking apart numbers into parts using ten-frames. The students will also review how to write each of these numbers. Next week will will finish up our second marking period. The children will finish up our Superkids unit on Icky and will move on to Hot Rod and the letter Hh. We will continue breaking words apart into individual sounds and blending them back together. In Science we will learn more about winter, including how animals survive the winter. Dugan will be presenting a special project about polar animals to the class as well. I am looking forward to another great week. The children helped me with today's report about our first week of 2012. The really enjoyed the Holiday Show and Tell today. They did a great job sharing and taking care of their toys. Please remember that no toys are allowed in school next week. Camryn said she loves her school and wants to be here every day. Luke said he liked learning about halves and fourths in Math class. Dugan really likes the new Magic Tree House book we started reading called Day of the Dragon King. Many of the children told me they enjoyed the worm and hermit crab projects they made in Ms. Hinchey's PSSA class. Some of the children told me they liked learning about ragtime music in Mrs. Evans' class. Laila said eating birthday cake at lunch for the JSC 30th Birthday celebration was yummy!
