Now that the weather is cooling down, please remember to send in sweaters or jackets for your child as we will continue to have outside recess. Quite a few jackets were left behind in school today. I will continue to remind students to take home all of their belongings each day and I am sure children will improve with this as checking for jackets becomes a habit. You can help by making sure all jackets are labeled with your child's name or initials. The jacket below was not claimed today. Please speak to your child or send in a note if you recognize it. It is a navy Old Navy hoodie. Also, a white girl's sweater went missing a little over a week ago and has yet to turn up. Please keep an

Each year I try find engaging and meaningful ways to integrate technology into our curriculum. One tool I will be using this year is a website called Padlet. It is an easy and fun way to share our work and ideas with each other in class and with you at home. I will post questions on our classroom "bulletin board" and students, with your help, can post their own response. I will send a note home and post a notice on the my homepage under Announcements whenever a new question has been posted. To try it go to my Padlet page under the more... tab and click on the link or scan the QR code. Participation is not required but those who respond will receive an extra PRIDE dollar. We will discuss student responses in class and I may use student preferences and interests to plan my lessons.
We have been gearing up for Fall and Johnny Appleseed Day by working on some fun apple themed projects. Before beginning our next Math Topic, we reviewed numbers by reading Dr. Seuss's Ten Apples Up on Top. We then counted and painted when we looked at numbers and added the correct number of apples on top of the characters from our story. This afternoon we continued our exploration of the five senses. The children discovered that smells(vanilla and mint) can change the taste of apples (slightly) and that our sense of smell can work together with our sense of taste.
Thank you to all family members who attended Back to School Night!
In Reading this week, the children have been working on a story, La Tortuga, about a very clever turtle. We have been practicing letters Aa-Ff and have been reviewing the colors red, yellow and blue. In Math the students are still practicing counting and writing numbers 1-5. In Science we have discussed what scientists do and are now exploring how scientists use their five senses to learn about the world around them. PRIDE Rules and appropriate behavior has been our focus for Social Studies. The children are trying to do their best work but are still practicing being quiet as they work. They have also been working hard on some special projects for you to see at Back to School Night on Thursday. I hope to see you there!
The children did a wonderful job jumping back into our routine after the long holiday weekend. They seemed happy to be back. The students in our room are seated in small groups I sometimes refer to as "table teams" and last week each child voted on a name for their team. The winners were: the Learning Team, Scissors Team, Crayon Team and Play-Doh Team. We change seats and team names each month. I also assigned classroom jobs for the first time and my helpers were very responsible today.
I saw great team work during Math class today as the children worked in small groups for the very first time. We worked in three groups and children took turns with the following tasks: Math page with Mrs. Bubnis Play-Doh numbers with Miss Chris Number one paper indpendently The children worked very well at each station and I saw many helpful behaviors. All of the great teamwork today led to many students earning PRIDE dollars. Many students also earned PRIDE cash for returning the name writing homework. Thank you to all parents for working on this important skill with your child at home! The first week is over and the children have learned so much in just five days! This past week was all about routines and behavior. The children spent this week learning how to work, follow directions and be good friends. We began using our behavior clip chart as well. Everyone begins the day on green for good behavior. Children can become blue star students through extra special behavior, being a helper and being a good friend. Yellow is a visual reminder to make good choices while red indicates a time-out or other consequence is needed due to more serious or repeated bad choices. You can see it for yourself on Back to School Night August 15th.
We began our Reading curriculum with the story Little Red Riding Hood. The children learned about story characters and retelling stories in order. The also practiced matching and used our color of the week-red. During calendar time the children practice counting, numbers, place value, graphing and more. They will be learning about the numbers 1-5 during Math next week. The children seemed to like all their co-curricular so. Gym is always a favorite. When they return to school next week the children will need to wear sneakers because will be Day 1-Gym day. Enjoy the long weekend! |
