In Reading, we've been working on Unit 9 Tt. This unit features three Superkids. The girls are Tic, Tac and Toc and they love to play together. In addition to writing Tt and listening for the t sound (and tr as in tree), we will also work on some short vowel sounds and on reading stories. The stories contain mostly decodable words meaning the children can say each sound in the word and blend them together to read the word, much like their blending homework. The only memory word featured in the Superkids workbooks so far is "a" which we usually pronounce "uh" because that is the way people talk. We will also work on the memory words we and of.
In Math, the children are learning all about addition. We tell stories about joining two groups of objects or pictures together (addends/parts) and then figure out the whole group (sum). The children learned to write number sentences using words, and, is, and symbols, + and =. They have only been addiding small groups to make sums of 10 or less. Next, we'll move on to subtraction where children will learn what the minus sign is and use it in a number sentence correctly. In Reading, we've been working on Unit 9 Tt. We have been working on many winter-themed activities and projects in Reading and Science class over the last few weeks. Most recently we've been studying Animals in winter including bears and birds. We may take a break from that this week to study Day and Night and Light and Shadows leading up to groundhog day.

Happy New Year and welcome back!
We worked on settling back into our routines this week and reviewing our classroom rules. We spent some time during Social Studies class reviewing our JSC PBIS behavior videos which show examples of what to do and not to do around the school. The children have been learning and trying to follow these rules for almost half the school year now (81 days to be precise) and so, starting next week we will begin to increase our expectations for behaviors in the classroom and out. This means that we will decrease the number of rule reminders and extra "chances" and will be quicker to move our clips and implement consequences. We will regularly review rules as a class and and reinforce the idea that each student must take control of their own bodies and behaviors. We will do many lessons on students being responsible for their own good an bad choices. They will also learn different strategies for thinking before acting, making good choices, and handling situations where they are easily distracted and likely to forget our rules. As always, we'll continue to reinforce good behaviors with lots of praise and PRIDE Cash. Reducing the number of disruptive behaviors and interruptions is especially important right now as we will begin to work on more difficult skills in Math and Reading. We will also begin to do more work throughout the day in small groups to help students learn and practice these concepts. In Reading, students will be studying the letter Ll. They will learn to write it and listen for the l sound but, they will also be reading whole words and matching them to pictures. They will break words into individual sounds and fill in missing letters. We will begin Guided Reading groups in which children will read stories with a teacher and try to retell the story, recalling as many details as they can. Working on the blending homework we send home will be very helpful. Your child should practice the "nonsense word" insert in the homework folder and any other blending pages or cards that are sent home as often as possible. Below is a brief example of how children practice blending sounds to read words they do not already know (like nonsense words).
In Math, the children have been struggling a bit when asked to count aloud to 50 for Marking Period 2 report cards. Many children stop at 29 and then skip to 40 or 50. Or perhaps they forget what comes after 39 and jump ahead to 50 or 60. At home, counting aloud daily and counting by tens to 100 can be very helpful. We will continue to review reading and writing numbers learned so far (0-20) and will practice counting aloud to 100 multiple times every day as we move on to Topic 6 in Math. This Topic is an overview of all number up to 100 and we will do a lot of counting practice. There is a 100 chart you can print to use at home on the "What Are We Learning" page and a paper version will be placed in your child's folder next week,
Speaking of folders...
We have noticed many homework folders are in pretty rough shape. We have been repairing then as best we can. The only replacement folders we can offer are paper and have no center fasteners for the inserts. If you would like, feel free to replace your child's folder with one of your choosing. It does not have to be a solid color but it would be helpful if it had the center prongs. If you are unable to replace a torn folder or repair them with tape, we will continue to do our best to repair or replace the folders as needed. Please empty folders every night to limit wear and tear on the folders. In Science over the next few weeks we will be covering winter. Our main themes will be Winter Weather, People in Winter and Animals in Winter. Mrs. VanStone has been working on Polar animals as well. We'll try to post some work on Seesaw soon so you can see our work. |
