This morning it was business as usual but this afternoon was very exciting. A leprechaun visited our classroom while we were at lunch and made a huge mess! He even left a golden trail around the room but, no real gold for us. We watched an Irish step dancing video and practiced some different patterns and steps ourselves. The children listened to a leprechaun story and colored rainbows. "Marble painting" our shamrocks was a lot of fun and so was the special leprechaun cake we ate this afternoon. Even though we had a lot of fun today, the children are very happy the weekend is here. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Today a veterinarian visited our school. Dr. Gloates spoke with the kindergarteners about all the different types of veterinarians and the animals they can work with. He talked to the children about pet care and safety. He brought two real dogs and the children were very excited to see them. They also liked the giant Clifford dog that he brought.
Please note:
Homework will be sent home today. It continues to be very warm in our room. Short sleeves are a good idea (even if the weather should cool off). There will be no Library this week due to a PSSA scheduling conflict. Children may still return books to school. In Reading, the children have been listening to and reading many stories about the Superkids who have created their very own clubhouse. They have been reading stories in their Superkids workbooks and additional Superkids' books in small guided reading groups. The children have been very successful with blending and segmenting words with three sounds. We are now focusing more on words with four and five sounds (like rest and flags). We have just started a unit on Measurement in Math. The children are having fun measuring objects in our classroom. This Math unit ties in nicely to our science program. The children are learning to work like real scientists by investigating, observing and measuring fabric. We had a fun day full of rhymes today. The children celebrated Dr. Suess's birthday by making a Lorax project and listening to their classmate Dugan read some silly Seuss tongue twisters in Oh Say Can You Say?. We watched a Seuss video and came up with our own rhymes as well. We will continue reading Dr. Seuss stories next week to celebrate Read Across America Day on March 7th.
The children were very excited to hear from David's family today. David moved away in November and the class miss him a lot. They were very happy to get an email including some pictures from his mother today! The children dictated some messages to me to send to David today. This week we started a Hands-on science unit all about Fabric. The children began by learning what a scientist is and how they work. We also discussed using our five senses to learn and answer questions. The children will use fabric themed activities to learn how to question, investigate, experiment, record observations, discuss results and draw conclusions. We will tie science to language arts through reading fiction and non-fiction books related to our theme and by writing in our science notebooks. Math will also play a central role. We will be counting, measuring, timing tests and recording data in charts and graphs.
