Superkids Memory Words
These words are also called sight words or heart words because students need to know them by heart. These are words that students cannot sound out because they contain sounds or spelling patterns the students have not learned yet. The following are words students will be learning in our reading program.

We introduce some words earlier than they are introduced in our reading curriculum because most of the children recognize them from our daily morning messages and word wall that we write together. We prefer to give children more time and practice with our memory words as well.

Vocabulary
Our readingpProgram Superkids introduces children to new vocabulary words in each unit. The words are all related to a theme and the letter taught in that unit. Students will not be expected to spell these words. They will learn what they mean to aid in their comprehension of stories and activities throughout the unit.
The following 12 units represent Level 1 of our reading program-Meet the Superkids.
Unit 1-Cass
Cass loves to to cook. She has a pet cat named Coconut. Children will listen for and say many words that begin with the hard c sound /k/.

Unit 2-Oswald
Oswald loves learning and sharing facts about all sorts of odd animals. Students will encounter many words witth the short o sound and:

Unit 3-Golly
As we follow Golly's adventures we will discuss words about gas stations (where Golly works as a guard dog), smells, and zoo words.
Unit 4-Alf
Alf loves to pretend he is having exciting adventures around the world.

Unit 5-Doc
Doc likes to fix things so, in addition to words that start with d, we will be learning the names of all sorts of tools.
Unit 6-Sal
Sal loves sports and games and we will be discussing words related to this theme throughout the unit.
Unit 7-Lily
Lily loves to play house with her family of toy lions. There will be a lot of household words covered in this unit. L words will also be emphasized. Some words not commonly used will be introduced: lass, lad, locket, lasso, lullaby. The homophones do and dew will be touched on in a ladybug poem. We study words that end in the -ad rime in this unit.
Unit 8-Icky
Icky loves to watch TV and we will be discussing television programs we like. Feelings are also touched on and children will learn the meaning of embarrased, worried, and relieved. Words that begin with short /i/ and words that have the medial short /i/ sound will be studied.
Unit 9-Tic Tac Toc
These three friends love games and music. We will discuss names for musical instruments and focus on words like trampoline, tangerine, tap shoes, tugging, and tag. We will also read a story about turtles which will introduce the vocab words include and ruin.
Unit 10-Frits
Frits loves fishing so we will discuss words related to fishing as well as words that begin with F.
Unit 11-Ettabetta
Ettabetta loves puzzles, riddles and big words that begin with e. We will discuss the words exercise, excellent, entertaining, and educational. Some words related to our Ettabetta story are enchanted and forest. We will also do some activities involving envelopes and addresses.
Unit 12-Hot Rod
Hot Rod loves racing and anything that goes fast. We will discuss race cars and othe vehicles in addition to words that begin witht he letter h.
